Petrol prices in India are revised daily at 6 AM by oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. The rates vary significantly across cities and states due to differences in Value Added Tax (VAT), dealer commissions, and freight charges. International crude oil prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate are the primary factors influencing daily price revisions.
Since June 2017, India follows a dynamic fuel pricing mechanism where petrol prices are updated daily based on the average international benchmark price and foreign exchange rates from the previous 15 days. State governments levy their own VAT on petrol, which is why prices differ from state to state—states with higher VAT rates naturally have higher fuel costs.
